How I Got Started in Taxidermy

Honestly, I never considered myself much of a writer or speaker (huge introvert) but I see this as a great way to connect with others and share a bit more about my life and experiences as an artist. Firstly, if you ever thought about giving taxidermy a try, my advice would be to please go for it. The world needs more taxidermists!

Oftentimes I get asked how I got into taxidermy. The simple answer - I love birds! Most of my time is spent reading about them, observing them, and studying them. My interest in taxidermy stems from my forever ongoing curiosity about this incredibly diverse kingdom. There’s common misconceptions around the topic of taxidermy, mostly being that a taxidermist kill/hate animals. As cheesy as this might sound, I have a dream of contributing to clearing up this misunderstanding. All taxidermists are naturalists that are deeply inspired by wildlife.

If you are also inspired by nature and thinking about giving taxidermy a try, please check out these online resources that have played a huge role in my understanding of this medium.

  • Bird Taxidermy Course by Allis Markham. You can find it on AtlasObscubra.com (she also has a mammal class!)

  • Elle Kaye’s Patreon

  • Art of Taxidermy’s youtube channel

If you found an informative book/online resource that I can add to this list, don’t hesitate to reach out! One day I’d love to also offer longform online tutorials, however, these artists are already teaching the subject so well.

I’m going to do my best to stay consistent with blog entries. I enjoy this format despite not feeling like a natural born writer. If there are any topics on taxidermy you would like to see my opinions on, you can send me an email at dragotaxidermypro@gmail.com. If you made it this far, thank you for reading my first entry.
